    MICHAEL MEEKING

    NOVEMBER ’72

The engine roars to life. You put a cassette in the tape player and press play. Who knows where you’ll end up? The road is wide open. You’re heading to the great unknown.

Welcome to November ’72, the new album for acclaimed Melbourne singer-songwriter Michael Meeking (“the rock swagger of The Faces, only more refined and performed better” – Americana UK).

As the title suggests, the album harks back to rock’s glory days. “I don’t really need all these material things gettin’ in my way,” Michael declares in Take ’Em Out. The record was written on a Chet Atkins reissue Gretsch electric guitar. It’s the soundtrack to simpler times, when records were real, and you scanned the liner notes to find out who was responsible.

Speaking of which, November ’72 was produced by Roger Bergodaz (Raised By Eagles, Lost Ragas, Tex Perkins, Suzannah Espie), who also adds his drumming talents; Steve Hesketh (The Drones, Jet, You Am I) provides the piano and keys (“his outro on the last track is a personal highlight,” Michael notes); and The Glorious North’s Patrick Devery and Darren Vlah contribute some sublime backing vocals.

“We had great fun just rocking out like teenagers,” Michael smiles.

The result is a classic road trip record, where the road is long, and you’ll need a good companion for the ride.

It’s an album about choices: “Where you going to go?” Michael asks. “What do you really need?” You know the road won’t be smooth; there are dark clouds ahead; “the darkness can overwhelm”, and you can end up far from anywhere. But it’s a journey you know you must take.

    The highway is alive tonight.

“Not only a gifted songwriter and performer, the hard-working Michael Meeking is one of the genuinely decent people floating around in this thing called the music industry” – Neil Rogers, Triple R

    Carly Simon marries James Taylor.

UK daredevil Stephen Ladd rides his motorbike through 50 yards of fire. He then convinces the organisers to allow him to do it again as the flames get fiercer. His bike stalls, and he’s killed.

lyrics

Dark Clouds
Words by Michael Meeking
Music byMichael Meeking and Roger Bergodaz

(Verse1)
When those dark clouds are coming down
And there looks like there is no escape
When those dark clouds are coming down
Sometimes all you can do is just wait

When only sadness seems to abound
And you try to, endure the pain
When that dark clouds is coming down
There’s an aching that’s so hard to tame

Chorus
This is the night before the dawn
And in this the time a new hope can be born
We got to try and make it through the storm
It will pass by if we can just hold on

Verse2
Winds of despair wont cease to howl
The light has gone away
You know it will come back around
Day by day this season will change

And the darkness can overwhelm
Make you feel like you’ve nothing but shame
Even though you may doubt yourself
The sun will rise again
Chorus
Verse 3
So when those dark clouds are coming down
Just know that they will not remain
And You can see it out
Sometimes all you can do is just wait
Chorus
