    MICHAEL MEEKING

    NOVEMBER ’72

The engine roars to life. You put a cassette in the tape player and press play. Who knows where you’ll end up? The road is wide open. You’re heading to the great unknown.

Welcome to November ’72, the new album for acclaimed Melbourne singer-songwriter Michael Meeking (“the rock swagger of The Faces, only more refined and performed better” – Americana UK).

As the title suggests, the album harks back to rock’s glory days. “I don’t really need all these material things gettin’ in my way,” Michael declares in Take ’Em Out. The record was written on a Chet Atkins reissue Gretsch electric guitar. It’s the soundtrack to simpler times, when records were real, and you scanned the liner notes to find out who was responsible.

Speaking of which, November ’72 was produced by Roger Bergodaz (Raised By Eagles, Lost Ragas, Tex Perkins, Suzannah Espie), who also adds his drumming talents; Steve Hesketh (The Drones, Jet, You Am I) provides the piano and keys (“his outro on the last track is a personal highlight,” Michael notes); and The Glorious North’s Patrick Devery and Darren Vlah contribute some sublime backing vocals.

“We had great fun just rocking out like teenagers,” Michael smiles.

The result is a classic road trip record, where the road is long, and you’ll need a good companion for the ride.

It’s an album about choices: “Where you going to go?” Michael asks. “What do you really need?” You know the road won’t be smooth; there are dark clouds ahead; “the darkness can overwhelm”, and you can end up far from anywhere. But it’s a journey you know you must take.

    The highway is alive tonight.

“Not only a gifted songwriter and performer, the hard-working Michael Meeking is one of the genuinely decent people floating around in this thing called the music industry” – Neil Rogers, Triple R

US President Richard Nixon is re-elected in a landslide.

Crazy Horse guitarist Danny Whitten dies, aged 29. Danny wrote I Don’t Want To Talk About It, which was later made famous by Rod Stewart. And his addiction inspired Neil Young’s The Needle And The Damage Done.

HBO launches as the first cable TV channel.

The BBC bans the Paul McCartney and Wings song Hi, Hi, Hi because of its drug references (“We’re gonna get hi, hi, hi”) and its sexually suggestive lyrics (including mention of Paul’s “sweet banana”).

The Aunty Jack Show premieres on ABC TV.

    Carly Simon marries James Taylor.

UK daredevil Stephen Ladd rides his motorbike through 50 yards of fire. He then convinces the organisers to allow him to do it again as the flames get fiercer. His bike stalls, and he’s killed.

lyrics

Little Lie
Words and music Michael Meeking

Verse 1
Oh my little lie
I thought you'd gone away
Oh my little lie
Your coming round again

Oh my little lie
The trust you devastate
Oh my little lie
What love you lay to waist

Chorus
Oh my, how I lied
Cause I was too afraid
That the truth might, make her take flight
And leave me here, with my shame

Verse 2
Oh my little lie
Such cherished faith you break
Oh why did I not find
The courage to be brave

I my how I tried
To save us both from pain
Oh why did I deny
When I was lead astray

Chorus
Oh my little lie
The Words I wish I didn't say
Oh my how I tried
To cover up my guilt and shame

Verse 3

Now she has seen the light
The truth, always finds a way
Now I’m, wishing I
Could go back to yesterday

Now I see in her eyes
Filled with such distain
She’s was my sunshine
And Her love I’ve betrayed

Oh my little lie
I thought you'd gone away
Oh my little lie
Your coming round again

Oh my little lie
The trust you devastate
Oh my little lie
What love you lay to waist
